MONTVILLE, NJ – The Montville Township Committee announced the tax increase for residents. Under the new budget they passed, there will be a 2.2423 percent increase in municipal and library taxes. This does not include the school budget tax increase. The average increase will be $50 for the average $536,050-assessed township home, according to Township Administrator June Hercek, who announced the budget. She said at the April 9 Montville Township Committee meeting that the budget took into consideration the “needs of the public when it comes to quality service, public health, and overall public well-being while continuing to maintain our commitment to prudent fiscal management.”

Hercek said that increases the township faced in putting together the budget included solid waste pickup and disposal ($290,384, a 8.42% increase, which makes up almost eleven percent of the overall budget), insurance (increased by 16%), public safety (annual maintenance costs for communications and technology and dispatch center and upgraded fiber optic cables for the upgraded radio system), and public works (road materials price increase, vehicle repairs, and supplies needed to maintain the town). Certain decreases offset the budget, such as decommissioned copper lines and decreasing gas prices. About eleven percent of the budget is being funded by fund balance, which essentially “returns to the taxpayers any excess generated in the previous year,” she said.

Attorney Fred Semrau reminded the public that the deadline to file tax appeals is April 1. He said there were only a handful this year, which speaks to financial stability in the township.

Niall Conway resigned from the Historic Preservation Review Commission; Victor Canning resigned from the Zoning Board, the Board of Health and the Design Review Committee; and Debra Stone resigned from the Environmental Commission.

The next regular meeting will be April 23 at 7:00 p.m.
