Morris County's Bridge Project Approaches Final Stages; Detours and Traffic Plans Announced

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has issued a traffic advisory for drivers in Jefferson, Morris County, due to the ongoing bridge replacement project. The Route 15 northbound ramp to Weldon Road westbound will be closed this week, with significant traffic management changes scheduled for Wednesday, April 24.

Starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, and continuing until 4 p.m. on Friday, April 26, the northbound ramp will be completely inaccessible. Concurrently, lane closures will affect the Weldon Road Bridge over Route 15 with alternating traffic patterns enforced from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday. During these hours, motorists should expect temporary 15-minute stoppages and are advised to plan for possible delays.

The closure and alternating traffic are necessary for the removal of construction barriers and for roadway restriping. By 2 p.m. on Wednesday, traffic on Weldon Road Bridge is expected to shift to its final configuration, restoring two lanes in each direction. However, the Route 15 ramp closure will extend until Friday afternoon to accommodate concrete curb work and repaving activities.

Motorists intending to travel from Route 15 northbound to Weldon Road westbound will be directed to a detour route. This involves taking the jughandle exit for Lake Hopatcong East Shore, proceeding across Route 15 at Edison Road/CR 615, and continuing to Espanong Road, which leads into Weldon Road.

The $7.6 million bridge project aims to replace the existing structure, enhancing vertical clearance and reinstating dual-lane traffic in both directions. Construction is progressing in phases, ensuring that at least one lane remains open at all times. Completion of the project is anticipated by spring 2024.

Drivers are encouraged to stay informed of any changes by consulting the NJDOT traffic information portal at www.511nj.org, which provides updates and real-time travel information. Adjustments to the work schedule may occur based on weather conditions or other unforeseen factors.
